Spoiler Alert!
This post contains spoilers, please watch the episode first.
And then there were 4. Things are getting interesting for sure as we now enter the semi-finals of the competition.
They kick off the bestseller challenge, with the theme of a Cuff bangle.
Think Warrior, Wonder Woman, Gladiator! Strong, fierce and tough as nails.
The bangle must have a 1 and a quarter inch gap (which to the rest of us is around 3cm).
It must contain stones, and all stones must be bezel set. 5 Hours to complete.
Supplied: 1.5mm thick silver plate/sheet.
Dan had a great combo of chalcedony and rutilated quartz - all of them angular. FYI corners are VERY challenging to set in a bezel setting.
Hugo chose citrine, blue sapphire and labradorite to go with his water/river theme bracelet.
Sonny chose moonstone cabochons and small white faceted stones to represent the night sky.
Tamara selected a central watermelon tourmaline, surrounded by four pink sapphires.
Why Sonny chose to forge his bracelet, when the end result could have been achieved by just hammer texturing the already given silver sheet is beyond me. Hugo's theme was lovely, but not very exciting or powerful. Dan's cuff was beautifully made (as always), and he really spent time on the design and thinking it through. His angular style is shining through. I have seriously underestimated him in terms of design. Tamara's use of colour really complimented her design idea, and it resulted in a strong but feminine piece.
Lights off: Sonny and Hugo.
Bespoke Challenge.
Design and make an engagement ring to replace the one stolen. The couple have lived and worked in Canada, they are obsessed with stars, and they have their first baby on the way.
The jewellers have each been given a 1 ct princess cut diamond. (and 24 melee diamonds if they should choose to use them). Also given - 9ct yellow gold. The stone must be set in gold (tube or claw settings)
I loved Sonny's graduated twist shank, not so much his setting.
Tamara's melted bezel setting gave me me a small stroke, but if I was given a princess cut diamond to do with as I please, I would have also loved to experiment. It is not often that you would be given such a chance. The curvy shank of her ring was in an ancient vase shape.
Dan's design was not very inspired, but his shank shape and the hidden star made up for it.
Hugo's interpretation was very literal and a bit of a bore - those are two strikes...
Well I have egg all over my face! My predictions from last week did not age well.
Dan's ring was chosen by the client, Tamara was jeweller of the week, and Sonny was sent home *sniff sniff*.
Will years of experience trump creative designs or youthful energy? Who knows, its all up in the air!
Last week I was so sure, now I don't have a clue.
DAN, TAMARA or HUGO ?
I would love to see your comments below.
See you next time for the FINAL!
